Actually as I was reading it, I thought she was very angry at it all. She came across as not liking Ashley at all, so in saying that why in the heck did she even bother to watch? Maybe she's another one who makes a living at her blog, so without the blog and ppl hitting on her blog she would be broke *shrug* who knows.

Glad she's not reviewing my life, that's all I can say. giggling

I was confused by that because she seemed supportive of Ashley in her earlier recaps. I guess she got sick of her and the show by the end. no idea

The Bachelorette Finale: Wherein Ashley's Sister Becomes the Highlight of the Season

By Lily Sparks 22 hours ago

Its been quite a ride, hasn't it? Lets give ourselves a hand. This has been an almost unbearable season of The Bachelorette. I've been a rabid fan for years, but this season was the first time I felt my temper sizzle every time the camera panned out on another lush location. Bentley and the way ABC handled him are responsible for a large part of that. But the reality is, Ashley was a TERRIBLE Bachelorette.

Don't get me wrong: She looks the part, she's adorable, she's bubbly, she wears kicky midriff T-shirts, whatever. But her specific type-A personality does not gel with reality TV. She's an overachiever (see: dental school, abs) who's rampantly insecure, and those aren't the traits of an enthralling reality heroine. Since the first episode, she has tried carefully to become a Bachelorette character and stay on-script, and there's nothing for the audience in that approach. ABC has spent this season mopping the floor with Ashley's ego, trying to get a rise out of her, and she's soldiered through, strapping on her stacked heels and false eyelashes and plastering on a smile on for another monotonously polite cabana dinner.

Once you compare Ashley to her sister, the deficiency is clear. (It's a vivid contrast: Ashley's whole family dresses not unlike the Osbournes. She must be the lone "black sheep" who goes out shopping instead of gathering around the kitchen sink on Black Hair Dye Night.) Chrystie brought to the game what Ashley was lacking: The ability to keep it real.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I love this lady. Her unflinching and articulate "calling out" of JP was the highlight of the season. She reminded Ashley that she didn't have to pick from these two guys. She didn't sugarcoat the fact that Ashley was acting super fake. She told JP straight to his face that her disapproval wasn't an issue he could "turn around." Chrystie even took Ashley to task for being wrong about Bentley. After weeks of hearing Ashley say she trusted her gut, it was delicious to see someone look her in the eye and tell Ashley that her gut has its pants on backwards and also just peed itself. Every woman should have access to a straight-talking punk divorcee older sister. How honestly refreshing was it to see someone from planet Earth step into the carefully curated Bachelorette reality and start pointing fingers? Better than one million ice cream sundaes.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Ashley had a big poolside cry about how Chrystie was not "supporting her." Supporting = putting on a game face and talking Bachelorette lingo, like the two guys. (Follow your heart. Take this journey. Only your heart can sing this fairytale heart song.) Supporting = helping Ashley justify going through with the proposal. Ashley was terrified of leaving the show alone. She kept saying she was ready to "be engaged" and "walk away with a husband." None of this sounds very much like someone who is head over heels in love, and her sister was reminding her that this show is about getting you want, not winning some man's approval. This isn't The Apprentice and you can't get fired. How much better would this season have been if Ashley had had that attitude all season? If she had challenged the guys with straight talk instead of playing little mind games with them? If she had dared to have a conflict or serious discussion instead of cleaning her teeth and finding her best camera angle while they talked? Ashley was left with a pair of guys who barely knew anything about her except that she "made them smile." And honestly, that's not typical of The Bachelor/ette franchise. The most popular Bachelor/ettes have chosen to not get engaged, or have had flare-ups. They found a moment in the show's script where they chose to keep it real rather than make things easy on Chris Harrison. And that's why the audience loved them.

Ashley seemed very rattled by her sister's opinions. Whether or not that contributed to her choosing JP over Ben is interesting. A little moment of defiance against a lifelong presence that seems a lot stronger than her own? Possibly.

I have sympathy for JP: Making a bald man sit out in the blazing Fiji sun to talk with parents is cruel. Fiji looks hellishly hot. Everyone on camera was openly toweling the sweat off themselves. Ditto Ben—the short walk from the lawn to the non-air conditioned storage unit where Ashley's family was camping out left him soaked in sweat.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And how weird were the puppy voices? Ashley's brother found them HILARIOUS.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Everything that came out of Ben's mouth in his human voice was weirdly resigned, like he had made peace with being an elaborate human sacrifice for the greater good. Which was kind of the case.

The next two dates were uneventfully polite (as usual.) Ashley and Ben cuddled in an open Fiji sewer. Ben is insanely built, right?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And JP gave Ashley a handmade scrapbook.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Sexual attraction and decorative-edge scissors should not mix.

After Ben and JP had had their final polite dates they went to choose their rings from The Devil and have a heart to heart about why the rings ABC was buying Ashley suited their weeks-long relationship.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

No matter how many proposals I see on Bachelor/ette, I always get sick nervous. It's 90 percent of the appeal of the show, just how crazy the moment is when they drop out all the music cues and you get the weird reality of two practical strangers in the middle of a flower arrangement breaking each other's hearts. I admit I held my breath when those long shiny slippers stepped out of the helicopter.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I was shocked that it was Ben. I predicted it would be JP, because he emotionally bonded with Ashley after Bentley smashed her to pieces. But there's no question that Ben is too cute, too built, and too intelligent to get turned down by Ashley in a dating situation that wasn't engineered to give her the upper hand. He seemed completely shocked, not only by his own willingness to propose but by her refusing him. But as soon as he got back to his feet, he seemed to come to his senses and fill with a smoldering rage that could very well propel him to either become the next Bachelor or burn down Chris Harrison's house.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I am really not buying this pair or their cheesy montage. During the "After the Final Rose" special, they didn't seem any more comfortable with their relationship, and neither did Chrystie.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

That face really says it all. But she did rally and support Ashley (in the real sense of the word) by declaring she "saw it" and was so sorry for every doubting it and all the other good PR things you would say if you wanted your sister to feel better about the bald stranger she was moving in with.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Chris Harrison brought the show to a close by congratulating the new couple and us on witnessing something beautiful and special. How beautiful and special is talking yourself into a long-term relationship?

I'm not feeling it with these two, but that could be simply be because of Ashley. She acted exactly the same with each Bachelor, so who knows, maybe behind the tightly orchestrated facade all her dreams came true. They just didn't translate to my TV screen.

Questions:

... Will Ben be the next Bachelor?

… Does Neil Lane use blood diamonds?

…. Should Chrystie be the next Bachelorette/start a talk show?!?!

… Did Ashley make the right choice?

… How long 'til she and JP break up?

The Bachelorette: The Men Tell All = ABC Tells Nothing

By Lily Sparks 22 hours ago

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

ABC's top-rated puppet show will apparently not be addressing how it strung Ashley along all season.

What was going on in last night's "The Men Tell All" episode? Everything looked the same as usual—Greek chorus of cheaply but fashionably attired catalog models, one thousand tea lights, Chris Harrison's smarmy soulless grin—but it felt very off.

As soon as the pre-recorded footage of Chris with Ashley started rolling, we saw that he immediately put her on the defensive: People have been criticizing her for not seeing Bentley for what he was!

What was he talking about? ABC has been roundly criticized for setting Ashley up in what's turned out to be a heartless ratings grab. The network never showed her the footage of Bentley's damning confessionals and flew him out to Hong Kong in an effort to keep the pair talking. Chris Harrison said, and I quote, that ABC "worked very hard" to get Bentley to the "Men Tell All" set. The network has milked his shameless cruelty right up to this second-to-last episode, airing multiple discussions about Bentley by the contestants, the former Bachelor/ettes, and Ashley herselft. But while keeping the cash cow in the peripheral vision, it hasn't once addressed why it concealed Bentley's motives from Ashley. Ashley even made a point of saying, "If I had seen what he had been saying, it would have been over"—and Chris Harrison quickly cut her off and changed the subject. AMERICA WANTS TO KNOW, CHRIS! Why didn't you show her the footage?

So of course Ashley was, as usual, brimming with insecurity, and at this point it's justified. ABC has built an entire season on antagonizing Ashley and the reunion episode continued with that premise by ghoulishly replaying her roast, playing several blooper reels of her making weird faces, snickering about staff apparently arranging a fruit phallus in her hotel room, and of course steering all conversation about Bentley toward the topic of "People really criticized you for not figuring him out, Ashley, even when you had all those texts from Michelle."

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The texts aren't the point. The show's aggressive editing to undercut Ashley and wring the most schadenfreude out of her interlude with Bentley is what everyone's been criticizing. No one has any illusions that ABC is earnestly in the matchmaking business. Bachelor Pad certainly proves the network has little affection for the dim former prom kings and queens who burn through cocktails in the network's SoCal mansion for a few weeks.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

But The Bachelor and The Bachelorette get away with a lot because of the gravity and importance they instill in their process. Look at your audience, ABC:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Do you think these ladies are thirsting for more evidence that women are habitually de-valued and betrayed by men? Call me crazy, but maybe they're watching a date show that involves weekly helicopter rides and world travel for the escapism! And there is no escaping into a reality show if the producers do not do their best to cast sincere people. If they want to maintain their brand, they need to cast to uphold the dynamic of one lucky bachelor/ette and several fawning contestants. Authentic emotion is the cornerstone of great reality television, and the only thing authentic on this season of Bachelorette was insecurity. ABC needs to reestablish this dynamic or it will become another weekly testimony to how many young people are willing to render themselves unemployable for a few weeks of adult summer camp.

Other highlights included from the episode:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

None of these three should be giving anyone advice on comportment.

I liked that Chris took the trouble to hastily spray paint his gift box to Ames with a metallic cheetah print.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And I resented that we were supposed to feel bad for Thick William. He said horrible things, but he meant it "without malice." So you weren't trying to hurt Ashley, you're just effortlessly cruel and thoughtless? Good to know.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

There was also an exceptionally lonely moment when Ryan said he had bought three—THREE—different books on questions to ask Ashley before going on the show. It was a startling admission of not understanding people/the world around him. I loved this lady's reaction:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And so it's been a lackluster, uneventful season in the wake of the trauma we all experienced watching Bentley. There's not much to talk about other than which of the relatively nice and handsome men Ashley is going to reject, and whether this show is going to eat its own snake-like tail if it don't stop re-casting former contestants as Bachelors and Bachelorettes. It's paramount to the survival of the series that it cast new blood as the next Bachelor. Give us some hot new blood!

QUESTIONS:

… Who will Ashley choose tonight during the finale of Bachelorette?

… Who should be the next Bachelor?

… Is ABC a low-down dirty dog, or is it just Chris Harrison?

… Why didn't Bentley show up?
