@GuardianAngel I know what you mean - most autistic people I know are not nearly as high functioning as Demi. Either they have Asperger's Syndrome (off the charts smart but socially awkward) or they are developmentally delayed.

@Norcalgal @GuardianAngel The problem with autism is that the spectrum is so huge that unless people are at the extremes it can be difficult to diagnose. Many fall in the cracks. I have a cousin who most people would never think has autism, but if you had seen him as a child, you would never believe it is the same person. He is still somewhat introverted, but for the most part now knows how to deal with others.

Men outnumber women 3 or 4 : 1 with autism because they only have the one X gene. Women are harder to diagnose since they often have more atypical symptoms. All the people I support are male. There are a few females in our agency, but they have the more typical symptoms.
