The Little Bachelorette Dictionary… will need frequent updates, so consider this a Part 1. Feel free to make corrections.

Anybody up for creating a Part 2? We could easily stretch this a few pages…

Words and meanings…

boy & man

William says he’s a 30-year old boy, but she dumps him in episode #5 because she wants “a man”
Ben feels like her boyfriend in both episodes #5 and #7. He feels she is his girlfriend, but is questioning the possibility of wife and fiancé. She does say that Ben has “qualities I’m looking for in a husband” so he is not entirely “a boy”.
When Ben first makes his “connection” in Phuket, he says he’s “on Cloud 9, man”.
Lucas is a traditional southern man with plenty of “manliness”
JP has never been called a boy, but five times a man
Constantine, however, is the stud!

cheese

Interestingly, there were three uses of the word “cheese” heard in episode #6 alone:
Lucas offers her a cheeseburger. (literal)
Constantine comments on Ryan’s “cheesy” lines by stating: “Some people like cheese. I can’t stand cheese in a can.” (half literal, half figurative)
Jordan tells Ashley: “This is going to come off so cheesy but don’t take it that way, but it just feels like it is meant to be a little bit…” (figurative)

Cloud 9

Ben reached it after making “the connection” in Phuket, man
Lucas reached it at the end of his date in Hong Kong.
Ryan reached it on his final 1 on 1 date in Taiwan, but… alas… it was too late.
JP only reaches it after she boosts his confidence…
(ep #2): I came in tonight deflated and discouraged of not getting that one on one and losing the coin toss to Mickey, but, now, to have it kinda excel to this level… I’m on Cloud 9.
(ep #7, spoken after getting the group rose in hindsight): Watching Constantine go on a date, having Ben not come home from a date and then to watch Ashley kiss Ames and Lucas on that photo shoot. All not good things. Bad. Bad. Bad. And then we had our photo shoot…

I feel back on Cloud 9. Got the rose at the group date. Not gonna lie. It’s a great feeling. I can’t wait for her to meet the family.

dances

Everybody wants to with Ashley. Ames gives her tickets to one. Ben C. gets a date built on it. Nick line-dances in episode #2 as Ben and Blake watch, as does Lucas in Hong Kong. In the Las Vegas’ group date (#2), she says “If he can’t dance and he tries, I think it’s really cute… but if he can dance, you know what that means: Good Times on the dance floor.” NO RHYTHM Nation wins the competition and BEST MEN loses the competition. Unfortunately, we do not see any kissing on that date (but there could have been) with the No Rhythm dudes, which hints that the “good times” are restricted to the dance floor…

Dancing per JP's bio intro on abc.com: I'm not opposed to it but I don't necessarily ‘like’ it. I have always wanted to learn to salsa

elephants

Ben paints one and sees them on the temple he “mental kisses” in front of. William wants first dibs on one on his 2 on 1 date

erhu

The music is heard at the start of Ben’s date in Thailand and both heard and seen towards the end of Jordan’s date in Hong Kong. Ben doesn’t mention it, but since he is love with Thai Culture, he probably knows what one is. Needless-to-say, Jordan is not much of a traveler… (Ashley to JP: We have music! Look. / Seriously? / Er… It’s an erhu! / I know what it is. / Do you know what it is? / Noooo)

flame torches

Every season has a few kissing scenes pre-RC in front of the mansion fireplace. On JP’s first 1 on 1, Ashley is sitting by her fireplace and the two have their second major kissing scene in front of it later.

However, nothing can beat the flame torches on Ben’s date in episode #5, complete with a troupe from Thai’s Central Casting.

forks

This is silly, but the editors have made this odd “body language” point of showing her and Ben eating with them a lot. However, in Hong Kong, she uses chopsticks and laughs at Jordan lacking patience with them by using a fork. Later, she is using a fork.

fruit

The wine is the fruit of Ben’s labor (hometown). When Tim was passing out talking to Ashley in episode #1, Ryan barked that he was having a “fruitful” conversation. Obviously, he wasn’t drinking Ben’s fruit, since Ashley says that has a “kicker”.

Acording to Blake speaking to both Ben and Jordan (ep #3), everybody is after the same piece of fruit. Ben chews an apple, telling JP, “Just be patient, otherwise you’ll drive yourself crazy.” JP: “I’m on the way…” Ben (mouth full) “I can tell, man! I can tell. Your mood…things are a little different.”

good times/things

Ashley expects “Good times on the dance floor” during her ep #2 group date, yet she also tells JP later that episode “I think we’ll have some good times ahead”. “Things” are mostly mentioned with JP (i.e. Taiwan), but briefly with Ryan too.

gorgeous/gorges

Lots of guys call her this: JP, Blake, Ryan and others.
She says in ep #6 that JP is one of the most gorgeous guys she’s ever seen in her life
The other kind is mentioned on Ben’s date card for ep #7 “overnight” in the Taroka Gorges, but the wording is used in similar fashion “Let’s spend a gorges day together”.

hair

This is Ben’s bag. He says he prefers brunettes and Ashley went that route this season. One of his first comments out of the limo concerned her hair color. She, in turn, said his hair is what attracted her on his hometown. Julia and mom had plenty to say about that… and he did get it cut for the rose ceremony…

happy place

Chris Harrison blog: People are anticipating the Bentley thing so much, but what really happens next week is telling the guys. She gets to this happy place and is almost a little arrogant and cocky because of it, but I don't think she thought through the effect it was going to have on the guys. It's like you walking up to your boyfriend and saying, "For the last couple of months I've been sleeping with another guy, but the good news is I don't want to have sex with him anymore." She didn't really understand it until our deliberation and all of a sudden things start to unravel in the cocktail party in Hong Kong.

That is the most bizarre paragraph Harrison ever posted. I personally think he is hiding something from us there. Ashley did not have sex with Bentley, so why go there? Usually (but not always) when “cocky” is used with a woman, she is in the company of other women. Yes, I am probably reading too much into it, yet these lines do make me suspicious that more happened in Hong Kong that we are supposed to know.

hawks and other birdies

A red-tailed hawk is visible in scenes with Masked Jeff (eps #2 & #3), who claims that he can see things others can’t. Later, after his mask is removed, he is completely shocked by Bentley’s early departure: “Out of all the guys, you had the most time with her and you’ve gone out with her the most. She likes you the most.”

In episode #6, another hawk soars over the Hong Kong skyline as Bentley visits Ashley. This is when Bentley’s “mask” comes off.

Other members of the avian world seen this season: a heron on Ames’ Phuket date (ep #4), a bird discussion on Ben’s market date (ep #5), canaries dooming Lucas’ fortune (ep #6), egret attacking carp on Ryan’s (ep #7) and robin on JP’s hometown (ep #8 ).

heartbreak

They have been beating us over the head with this one. I think Bentley’s line (ep #3) is the theme for the season:

Heartbreak is worse than any illness in my opinion. It’s not just physical pain, it is emotional pain, but it has to happen.

Later, Jordan repeats the “it has to happen” necessity of this feeling at hometown:

At the end of all this, someone… someone’s heart is going to be broken, but unless I completely… completely put myself out there and expose my vulnerability and allow myself to get hurt, there is no way that “we” could ever work…

Everybody on this show has experienced some level of it, often involving the loss of a loved one or a break-up… William, Ben and Ames’ fathers died, West’s wife died, Mickey’s mother died, Lucas’ divorce was bitter (that “You put every %$#@ minute into her” may have been a cut-and-re-edited line about his ex and not the Hong Kong Bentley discussion), etc.

However the H word is ONLY heard with Bentley and Jordan…
Ashley in Taiwan: So, I was just thinking… I know that you, of all the people here, are a really strong man with a good head on your shoulders and, to hear that you were having a really hard week, it really broke my heart… but I also feel your pain because I was there and I want you to get through these hard times because I think that, there’s a good possibility that, good things can come from it… so I want to meet your family so bad…

honestly

Honestly, this word is spoken more often than “like”.

She says it with practically every bachelor and Chris Harrison. Is she being “100% honest” with them? The word was used a lot when discussing Bentley “being the one”. Shortly after she uses the word with Ryan, she dumps him. Several bachelors including William, Blake and Constantine use it a lot. Haven’t heard either Ben or JP use it yet... unless I’ve missed it.

So far, unless this changes the next episode, Ashley only said it with JP shortly after he brings up Bentley in episode #3, indicating that she was hiding something from him. All other times, the word is “honest” or “100% honest” (particularly during the Bentley reveal to him in Hong Kong). Also, she doesn’t say it in any PI or VO about JP that I have found so far. Somebody can correct me here.

My theory is that she says this word when she isn’t 100% sure if she’s honest, but hoping to be. And speaking of hope…

hopeful

She uses this word a lot post-Bentley, but this is not a word of confidence.
However, the most alarming use of this word involves Ryan, using “hopeful/hoping” a lot on his 1 on 1 date in Taiwan.

IT

The “L” word… or so we think. JP said he hadn’t felt IT yet on his first 1 on 1 date (before his first real time with her). On the hometown, he labeled that date as a first step, so to speak, and after Phuket, IT turned very real. He told Roy on hometown that IT was definitely there.
(Titou reminded me of this one a while back... I didn't even think about it when watching the last episode.)

natural

Everything Ben does is this.

the Nature of the Beast

Good ol’ Blake brought this one up in episode #4. When JP brings it up with Ashley in episode #5, he is referring to the “process” of having to share her with other guys like Ben, but her wide-eyed expression suggests that the “beast” may be something more provocative and stimulating for her.

nervous

She is asking everybody if they are, particularly Ben for some odd reason.
Jordan tells her not to be just before she brings up Bentley to him in Hong Kong, since she says she is twice.
When she sees all of the guys at the Hong Kong cocktail, before revealing Bentley, she says they are making her nervous.

oh my goodness/gosh/god

Ashley said this frequently in Brad’s season when excited, but the editors got downright weird on us this season. The ONLY times we hear her say it is when…
a.) there is a wedding/engagement: with William (This could be a legally binding marriage) and the engagement on the Hong Kong beach, post dragon race
b.) there is a family/home connection: calling Matt’s mom on the Blackberry in episode #1, looking at family photos with Ben’s mom, seeing Constantine’s “Welcome Home” sign
c.) her libido is on the rise: “falling for” JP at the skating rink.

The “gosh” version is associated with marriage situation in the two I’ve caught…

Bentley uses a sarcastic “gosh” version when discussing the thought of marrying Ashley. (episode #2)

Lucas in Taiwan wedding photo shoot: You know, JP has been pouting quite a bit about Ben not coming home. He wouldn’t talk. He was just cranky. He was moody. He comes out. His whole attitude changes when he gets that tuxedo on. If he would had my outfit or Ames’ outfit today, oh my gosh, he would have just thrown a fit like a 15-year old, so…

Ashley says “God” at the start of one set of previews (after ep #6) and when William discusses his father’s death. She almost says it during other death conversations and we have plenty of those this season.

As for the dudes' use of “God”:

JP says “God” when he sees the Hong Kong skyline, when his libido is on the rise.

Constantine says it when their wish lantern goes up and is ousted by multitudes of others (Her wish is to get married… but to Dino? After all, their lantern was a bit cursed for him: “Our love got pissed on”)

Ames says it when he sees JP in a tux.

100%

Mike (stepdad) expected this from Brad on last season’s hometown: He feels like he really likes Ashley, but if he really loves her and respects her ambition and what she wants in life, he should support her 100% and that’s what I want to ask Brad.

Ben optimistically states at the start of his date: There’s a 100% chance that Ashley will get kissed today.

Aside from wanting to be 100% honest, Ashley has used this percentage a few times. However, her philly.com interview stated: I wanted to give every guy a chance but by the time of the hometown dates, I was probably 95 percent sure.

Roy to Jordan (ep #8 ): Do you think she feels the same way about you as you do about her?
Jordan: I can’t tell you 100% because I don’t know if she feels that way 100%... I mean, nothing’s 100%.

patience

JP’s abc.com bio says he lacks it.
Both Ashley (ep #2) and Ben (#4) tell him to be patient.
His fortune cookie on his first 1 on 1 date tells him to (per Ashley’s blog for ep #3)
He’s mighty impatient for his next 1 on 1 date under the Phuket umbrella.

pink

This color is favorable for Jordan. It also helped Constantine, since his dental floss “ring” was. Ben C. briefly wore a pink shirt in a rose ceremony he succeeded at. This is not a lucky color for Ames, however. Ryan probably thought he was boxing Jordan when he saw Ames dressed in it. When Ryan wore a pink shirt, he got dumped.

Rain:

It all starts the moment Bentley closes her door in episode #3.

Episode #6: Blake calls JP one when he says in Hong Kong: “I addressed all of this with her last night” (regarding Bentley)

Urban dictionary definition:
A pool player who does not play at the skill level he or she is really at. In many cases, he is ahead of “the game” and doesn’t want anybody to know his position.

During the Hong Kong group date, Blake and Ben played billiards while discussing Ryan and questioning what she sees in him. She, in turn, picks up the group rose for Ryan and purposely ignores Mickey’s wining. (Yes, she heard him!)

When JP revealed he knew already about Bentley, “It spoke volumes”. The editors cut into a curious line by Ryan in that scene, as well as Lucas’ spontaneous laugh. How many of the guys knew his “position” at this point? Hard to determine, but Blake certainly knew.

This may also put a whole new spin on the events of Taiwan… like the teasing after Ben’s late date return. Ben was also quite sarcastic telling Ryan that Lucas would be bringing back the group rose date.

sexy

We all know what this means, but, as mentioned on two other posts here, I found her hometown use of it most interesting:

I love seeing Constantine here at the restaurant. He looks really sexy here, y’know, walking around. He’s such a stud.
Ben is so sexy. The hair, the fashion, the sense of humor… he’s a winemaker. It’s so cool. Everything about him screams sexiness to me.
Speaking to Jordan on the roller skating: Oh my goodness! Who do you think is gonna fall first? Listen, if you fall, it is not going to be sexy. I’m probably gonna fall before you do.
Then again, JP already got called one sexy man back in Phuket.

For the record… just so we don’t leave our favorite nerd out of the conversation…
Ames stated back in episode #1: I'm probably jinxing myself but my first choice is Ashley H. because I'm always attracted to women who are passionate about what they do, because I think it is sexy to love what you do.

Ashley told JP not to be in rainy Phuket.
She asked him if he was over hometown dinner when Ilene told him he looked sunburn.

smitten

Ashley uses this word with Ilene on hometown.
No clue what this one means... ha ha!

umbrellas:

William has trouble holding one during the Ohio wind in his introduction. Ryan tries to steal time with Ashley with one, just as Jordan succeeded earlier. Ben paints on one with Ashley at market. Ashley is clinging to one while her voice-over worries about “getting over Bentley” in episode #5 and recap at start of #6.

walls

Literal walls painted at the Phuket orphanage with both final 2 (Ash & JP: Am I doing OK? / You’re a pro. / Yeah? / Yeah…; later painting the Ashley Flower on Ben’s)
Ben (ep #6): The walls are down and if that means I get crushed in the end, that’s a part of it.
Brad (post carnival date last season): I had so many walls built up… and tonight with Ashley, all of those came down.

I've snipped your post for brevity. I looked up smitten in the dictionary and this is what it says:

Of all the words in your list of definitions this may be the most important one. This is a word from my mother's and grandmother's generation more than ours. It's dictionary definition is:

smitten
1.struck, as with a hard blow.
2.grievously or disastrously stricken or afflicted.
3.very much in love.

I think it's a way of getting a message across to Ilene in a way that Ilene would understand but that the show would not censor like they would its 3rd meaning "very much in love". As soon as Ashley said this to Ilene, Ilene's eyes softened and she reached out an grabbed Ashley's hands and smiled and that was the end of her doubts about Ashley.

"Smitten" is absolutely Ash's word- she first used it when she did a vlog for Brad's season and called herself a "smitten kitten" during their first 1:1. I'm guessing JP picked it up from her, not necessarily because she said it to Ilene at HTD but because it's a word she likes and probably uses often with him.

Thanks so much. I agree about IT, but didn’t explain my self well. May re-edit it better.

A couple things were covered already in previous quote compilations, including the “right track” statement. One thing that bothered me slightly on that line is that Kiptyn says the same thing about Jillian in Spain, so the editors have been careless with that line in the past. HOWEVER… ha ha ha!... we actually got a TRAIN shown when JP says it.

Curious if a Titanic reference is made on Ben’s date. If this is the case, then he, Ames and Williams all got it, but JP’s “shot” was cut to prevent any “comparisons”…

JP uses it on his vblog about Hong Kong.
Ashley uses this word with Ilene on hometown.
No clue what this one means.

Of all the words in your list of definitions this may be the most important one. This is a word from my mother's and grandmother's generation more than ours. It's dictionary definition is:

smitten
1.struck, as with a hard blow.
2.grievously or disastrously stricken or afflicted.
3.very much in love.

I think it's a way of getting a message across to Ilene in a way that Ilene would understand but that the show would not censor like they would its 3rd meaning "very much in love". As soon as Ashley said this to Ilene, Ilene's eyes softened and she reached out an grabbed Ashley's hands and smiled and that was the end of her doubts about Ashley.

What's interesting is that the first time we hear it is in JP's video blog but that is not the first time it was used; the HTD preceded the video blog. JP could have gotten it from Ashley's use on the HTD - assuming that he heard what she had said even though she only said it to Ilene.

"Smitten" is absolutely Ash's word- she first used it when she did a vlog for Brad's season and called herself a "smitten kitten" during their first 1:1. I'm guessing JP picked it up from her, not necessarily because she said it to Ilene at HTD but because it's a word she likes and probably uses often with him.

Oh, Alanna... just when we were havin' fun here! That is just like the "on the right track" line, a recycle from past seasons they decided to give more Grade A "polish" to... but I'll add it to the previous post.

talking about brunette. I think on George Lopez, Ash finaly found her true color if we make comparison with herself (somewhere here we have a goofy picture of her). Funny to see that her actual color AND hair looks so very much alike Andrea (his brother's girlfriend).
