I'm sorry for your snow. That's not nice in May. We're having lovely spring weather right now but it's soon going to change to rain over the next week. Hope there's no more hail storms.

It is a celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday, started back in the 1800's. IIRC without looking it up.
It was usually May 24th, which Canadians eventually named the holiday in slang terms, May 2-4 aka a case of beer.
It's also the weekend, cottage owners open up their cottages and it's considered the start of summer.
For those that follow the tradition, we can now start wearing white until Labour Day. I have no idea where that came from, but that's the rule as long as I can remember.
