Tornadoes struck Thursday evening in eastern Iowa and northern Illinois, according to the National Weather Service, which urged people around the Midwest to be on alert for severe weather.

The weather agency noted that at 5:46 p.m. (6:45 p.m. ET) a "large and extremely dangerous" twister moving northeast at 40 mph was spotted near Camanche, Iowa. Clinton County -- which includes Camanche -- and nearby Carroll County, Illinois, were among the areas threatened by the system.

"This is a particularly dangerous situation," the service said.

A “large and extremely dangerous tornado” has touched down near Kirkland, Illinois, prompting a tornado warning in parts of DeKalb, Boone and McHenry counties.

The tornado has been confirmed on radar and is moving northeast at 40 mph, the National Weather Service said.

The tornado will be near Kingston, Belvidere and Marengo within 20 to 25 minutes, and will also be near I-90 between mile markers 43 and 56, the weather service said.

Forecasters say residents should take cover immediately. Damage to businesses and vehicles are likely and flying debris could be deadly to anyone caught outside without shelter.

A tornado warning continues until 7:45 p.m. for north central DeKalb Bounty, southern Boone County and southwestern McHenry County.
