It takes two to tango. (Well, two plus a camera crew)


Things change quickly in The Bachelorette-world. Just one week into the series, the men have all become frowny bores who want to talk about politics and climate change. And Sam’s turned into a right old boiler with grey hair and dorky glasses.

Wait a second — I’ve been watching a repeat of Q&A this whole time! Let’s flick over to Ten for the real Bachelorette adventures.

Since David the model proved he was, in fact, a “conflictuous” type, leading to his widely celebrated booting, the mood among the remaining contestants has measurably improved. The holy bro code is back in operation, too.

“We’ve got to keep that mutual respect,” the gents agree, which is difficult to do when one of them is wearing an Adelaide Crows beanie.

Sasha’s official Sam-date involves training in the art of Argentinian tango. “My dancing skills are horrific,” says Sasha, who makes up for it with sheer application. Sam remains in smitten mode, repeatedly admitting that Sash makes her nervous. Relax, girl! He’s not a jihadist.

A chat between Sasha and Sam takes an unexpected turn to deepness when both discuss their respective stepfathers, whom they adore. Sam’s unusual level of insight emerges when she admits that her stepfather had to make a huge effort to win her over: “I was just a little bratty kid. He ended up teaching me.” At one point Sasha is close to tears, but hauls it back just in time to avoid losing his Australian citizenship.

By the way, Sam might have the best laugh in Australian television. It’s terrific. But she’s also an occasional uptalker, given to finishing sentences with a rising inflection. I blame her step-dad for not being mean enough.

This week’s solitary mention of “the journey” occurs just prior to Sasha completely blowing his chance for a first serious kiss, then eight of the blokes are sent to a polo field to interact with dogs.

It’s a test of the future parenting skills, apparently.

Sam has selected dogs that remind her of each contestant, which leaves Will slightly bemused. His pooch is, he says, just “a cloud with a face”. But he scores points by referencing the work of pre-war US artist Grant Wood, which kind of flies by the rest of the cast.

The gang is genuinely supportive of Kayne, who is battling to keep up with his more confident colleagues. They gather on a balcony to quietly watch as Kayne launches a major charm offensive on Sam. It is probably the only charm offensive in history to begin with the line: “How do you feel about rap?”

Remarkably, it works. Kayne’s love rap is more of a straight-out poem, yet the bravery of the move wins Sam’s admiration. His mates are seriously relieved.

Sasha’s missed chance for a pash is weighing on his mind. He really needs more face time with Sam — literally. So the pair commence a UN-style negotiation over the entire kissing process. “I’m physically attracted to you,” Sasha tells Sam.

“That’s always a good thing,” she replies.

This continues for some time. And then — the kiss.

Sam doesn’t come up for air for at least ten seconds, then they lock lips for more.

“It was exactly how it was supposed to feel,” Sam says in her post-kiss review. Needless to say, Sasha again receives his rose even before the rose-giving phase. He’s so far in front now that he’d probably still hold the lead if he murdered a nun or something.

The booting ceremony is a relief for Kayne, whose daring rap strategy earns him a rose. But it’s curtains for Drew the owl man, whose neediness saw him kicked off the perch. Nevertheless, Sam is in tears as the men farewell their long-haired bro.

“Keep crazy, mate,” Drew tells Will, who doesn’t really have a choice.

Drew is probably the last obvious pick for a booting, because although the rest are basically battling for second place behind Sasha, Sam seems to like them all. And they all like each other.

What we need here is someone to bust away from the pack with an act of pure evil. I’m tipping Kayne. He’s already a rapper. Now he should go gangsta.
