Reporter joins hopeful fans trying out for 'Bachelor,' 'Bachelorette'

'Are you here for the right reasons?'

I never thought I would want to find love on a television show.

But after dating doozies over the years, now I understand.

On Thursday night, I auditioned to be among future Bachelors and Bachelorettes at Maryland Live! casino in Hanover. (I’ve been watching “The Bachelor” since I was 14. At 25, I’m still watching the dating show and its sibling, “The Bachelorette.”)

I spent the night before and the day of the audition wondering what to wear and what the casting judges would ask. I filled out an application with about five pages of questions, including this doozy:

“Are you here for the right reasons?”

Is that a trick question?

After I filled out the application, the producers knew more about my personal life than I did.

At the casino, I expected to see a long line of typical “American Idol” hopefuls — beautiful wannabe actors, male and female.

But while many of the 50 or so people were attractive, I really felt they were there for the “right reasons.” I met a budding actress, but I also met lawyers and graphic artists. And, to my surprise, a male friend I’ve known since I was a kid.

There was also “superfans” auditioning. One of those taking part was Danielle Rippertore, 24, of Pasadena. She was a big fan of Southern belle Emily Maynard, who appeared on season 15 of “Bachelor” and season eight of the “Bachelorette” (if you didn’t know). Maynard was looking for love after her fiance had been killed in a plane crash.

“I watched her from beginning to end and she was my favorite,” Rippertore said. “Her story was very heart-wrenching.”

Other women were “dragged out” by friends who nominated them. One was Katie Powers, 25, of Elkridge. Her friend said that “Baltimore men can’t keep up with” her. Powers said she never thought about auditioning before but always watched the show.

“Me and my friend are on the phone like, ‘Can you believe Tierra (one notorious woman on “The Bachelor”)?!”

The night’s theme: There just aren’t enough good men out there.

“I’ve tried looking for love at other places, but nothing has worked,” said Arlana Roland, 23, of Baltimore.

During my audition, I had my own “Bachelor” moment.

I sat on a cushioned booth with my male friend and a few other women, as I waited for my group to be called. One of the women was not friendly — and was being friendly. She was checking us all out and didn’t bother interacting with us.

After she left the table, we decided she clearly wasn’t there to make friends. But she would make good television. It was a Tierra moment.

I was led to another room in the casino with the other people in my group, and all the gamers in the casino stopped in their tracks and stared at us, trying to get a sneak peak of the next Bachelor and Bachelorettes.

Then I sat nervously waiting with my fellow prospective contestants. But a very welcoming casting judge put me at ease.

I was videotaped while I discussed my love life, as well as my goals and interests. The casting judge seemed interested in my story: growing up in England and moving to the United States due to military life, the fact that I am a journalist, dancer and figure skater. It was an audition for a television show, but it felt easy and natural.

The casting directors will narrow down the prospective contestants. Maybe I’ll get a call-back. I already feel I’m on the show — sort of.

As I stepped into the elevator, a man stared down at my bag with the ABC logo.

“Did you audition for ‘The Bachelor?’ “

I paused.

“Yes.”

The woman next to him was listening.

“I hope you get on the show, so I can say, ‘I saw her in the elevator!’”

Hundreds of women show up for Seattle audition of "The Bachelor"

By KOMO staff Published: Jun 15, 2013 at 3:01 PM PDT Last Updated: Jun 15, 2013 at 6:00 PM PDT

SEATTLE -- Lydia Cruz lined up to audition Saturday in Seattle for "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" two of the most popular shows on ABC.

"It makes me nervous but I feel like if you are open to love in any situation whether there is a camera there or not, it can happen," Cruz said.

Cruz was one of hundreds of women to respond to an open casting call by producers of shows at the Pan Pacific Hotel.

They said they are looking for people who possess the charm, style, class and charisma to become America's next leading lady or leading man on the show.

The people who showed up Saturday said they are ready for the emotional roller coaster of reality television.

On the last season of the show, bachelor Sean Lowe proposed to graphic designer and Seattle resident Catherine Giudici, the last woman standing.

Casting Call at Bernie & Phyl’s

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Next Saturday, locals will be able to browse for a new loveseat all while shopping for a soulmate to canoodle with it on. Braintree’s Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture is hosting an open casting call for ABC’s hit reality dating show “The Bachelor” on June 22 from 1 to 5 p.m., and is welcoming all 21-plus individuals in who are looking for their shot at publicly-televised love.

Although contestants typically come from previous seasons of the show, a release said agents are looking for men who want to follow in Sean Lowe’s footsteps and be the next bachelor, in addition to women willing to date the next Hollywood hunk on live TV.

Customers strolling into the store a week from today should be camera ready. Interested participants’ picture will be taken, and they’ll also be filmed, so agents can get an idea how well they would answer future questions if interviewed during the show’s airtime.

To audition, individuals must be at least 21 and a U.S. citizen. Another key quality? Being single. Looking for love is hard when you’re already falling in love with someone else.

For the full, rather lengthy list, of eligibility requirements, click here.

The good news is, is that a couple hundred singles are speculated to attend. So, if you don’t get called back to be on “The Bachelor,” that doesn’t mean you won’t find love whilst mingling with other reality show hopefuls over a matching recliner sofa and loveseat set.

Seattleites look for love at the 'Bachelor' and 'Bachelorette' casting call

With curated outfits and glossy headshots, 140 men and women arrived at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Seattle yesterday, hoping for a chance to be cast on the next season of ABC's "The Bachelor" or "The Bachelorette."

Which, given the last two seasons, isn't entirely unlikely: The current season of "The Bachelorette" features Seattleite Chris Siegfried among the eligible men, while last season, former Amazon employee Catherine Giudici was the final pick by Bachelor Sean Lowe.

Some of the candidates traveled from as far away as Spokane and Portland to be there.

But why show up at 9:30 a.m. on a Saturday, hair curled and hopes high, just to be on a reality television show?

"I'm here to find love!" explained biologist Elizabeth Larson, who'd come from Snohomish County, and called it a "good learning experience."

Alex Eli, one of the prospective Bachelors echoed the sentiment.

"I've tried at love too many times and failed, and thought that this would be the best chance to try something new."

Others were compelled by friends or family members.

"My mom didn't want me to be a cat lady," Rhianna Stepler-Camp explained, "She confronted me with it last night at midnight and was like 'You're going.'"

"The adventure aspect is really appealing," she added. Cast-members of the show are often taken to exotic locales and put up to exciting challenges, another component that many candidates cited as a reason to potentially put their love lives in front of the nation.

The casting process, which candidates described as "really fun" and "laid back," included low-key interviews with producers -- and a whole lot of sitting around and socializing.

Candidates will be notified of casting decisions later this summer.
